The African Sociological Association is a
professional body of African sociologists and
sociologists living, working or interested in
Africa and the African condition. AfSA is
devoted to the advancement of the study of
'sociational life' (to quote Akinsola Akiwowo)
rooted in, and concerned with the African
condition. It is devoted to valorising distinct
African voices and insights into the global
sociological enterprise.
In December 2002, a group of sociologists met in Kampala (Uganda) and
inaugurated the African Sociological Association (AfSA). This meeting
was on the back of the 10th General Assembly of the Council for the
Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA).  The
inauguration was a culmination of attempts and interactions over several
years and at different forums, to create a pan-African association of
sociologists—including two previous general assemblies of CODESRIA
(1995 and 1998) and the 1998 World Congress of the International
Sociological Association, in Montreal, Canada. In an effort to finalise the
process of creating the pan-African sociological association, a
preparatory meeting was held on the back of the 2002 Congress of the
South African Sociological Association, which drew participants from
Southern, East, Northern and West Africa. The preparatory meeting gave
a Steering Committee the mandate to formally inaugurate the association
during the CODESRIA General Assembly, later that year. This was partly
because CODESRIA's general assembly is the most likely venue for
getting a substantial number of African sociologists together at any one
point on the continent.

The establishment of AfSA is rooted in the knowledge that an institutional
framework like the African Sociological Association will help to overcome
the isolation and fragmentation in intellectual production that we have
experienced in the past, and provide the institutional context for
stimulating and valorising both the community and its intellectual
production.

The inaugural meeting of AfSA elected an Interim Executive Committee,
with the mandate to organise the 1st Congress of AfSA. The congress will
hold from 15 to 18 July 2007. (
